Delivering Hack Notifications “Could Take Considerable Time”

OPM has announced it began mailing notification letters to the more than 21 million federal personnel and contractors who had their personal information siphoned out of government databases this summer, and it cautioned that, “it could take considerable time to delivery them all.”

OPM said email would not be used to notify anyone whose personal information was stolen. Notifications include a PIN number that can be used to enroll in identify theft protection and credit monitoring services. The services are available for three years and extend to dependent minor children.

OPM says it will not contact you to verify any of your personal information, and that no one acting on its behalf will either – something to keep in mind.

It also said that the number of individuals that had their fingerprints stolen is much higher than initially thought – around 5.6 million. The notification letter will include whether your fingerprints were compromised as well.
