DoD Mandates Migration to Cloud Email by Early 2015

DoD is directing all components to draft plans to migrate to the department’s cloud email platform.

The department’s enterprise email service – DEE, has been designated as a DoD enterprise service in support of DoD’s transition to the Joint Information Environment, according a memo from the DoD CIO.

“DEE provides secure access to email from any location, at all times, from both stationary and mobile devices,” the memo said, adding, “With a shared directory that includes all members of the department, it provides a common platform for the DoD to coordinate across geographically dispersed and diverse organizations, as well as plan and schedule cross-organizational meetings.”

The department said DEE is to now be included in the DoD enterprise architecture for compliance purposes. As a result, all DoD components are being tasked with developing an implementation plan by mid-January that inventories existing email capabilities, and that initiates migration no later than the first quarter of fiscal 2015.
