NIST Awards Operations Contract for Cybersecurity Center of Excellence

The National Institute of Standards and Technology has announced it awarded MITRE Corp. a $29 million contract to operate the first federally funded research and development center – FFRDC, dedicated to cybersecurity.

MITRE operates six other FFRDCs and NIST said the center, in Montgomery County, Md., helps businesses secure their data and digital infrastructure by bringing together experts from industry, government and academia to provide real-world cybersecurity solutions based on commercially available technologies.

Commerce secretary Penny Pritzker said the award (with a maximum amount of about $5 billion over 25 years) would enable the center to “expand and accelerate its public-private collaborations.”
