Report Examines Managing Risk with Mobile

The Mobile Work Exchange (formerly the Telework Exchange) has summarized basic steps agencies need to take to better manage the risks associated with an increasingly mobile workforce.

“Managing Risk in a Mobile World,” follows up on the Exchange’s “2014 Mobilometer Tracker” study and argues for a comprehensive approach to protecting devices and networks while also educating the end user.

The report – sponsored by Cisco – says 90 percent of federal workers report using mobile devices for work, but that just 53 percent of agencies report that they provide employees with guidance about mobile security.

Recommendations for agencies: “Have clearly written policies that provide workers the guidance to use mobile devices safely; Install mobile device management software on the mobile devices of their workers; and, Develop an accurate inventory of the mobile devices connecting to their network so agencies know and control their environment.”

Recommendations for employees: “Become familiar with mobile device security policies outlined by their employer; Embrace fundamental security measures, from the use of passwords and encryption to understanding the potential risks associated with the use of public networks.”
