Some Question Whether Records Management Goals Attainable

A presidential directive to improve data quality standards and information management will improve recordkeeping, but many agencies probably won’t be able to meet the deadlines it sets, according to a new report from MeriTalk, a public-private partnership focused on improving government IT.

The report, “Federal Records and Information Management: Ready to Rumble?” – sponsored by storage and information management provider, Iron Mountain – is based on interviews with 100 agency records and information management professionals. With a December 31 deadline fast approaching to identify all permanent records in existence for more than 30 years, the report found that just over half say they would be able to meet the deadline, while 46 percent are not confident whether longer-term requirementsare realistic and attainable.

The report says over half of federal records and information management pros see a need for better trained personnel and dedicated funding to help them meet a 2019 deadline to completely transition to digital record keeping.
