USPS Piloting Mail Notifications on Smartphones

The Postal Service has said it is developing a daily digital mail notification for customers to let them know what’s in their mail that day. So-called real mail notification is being piloted in Northern VA and so far engagement has been high with nine out of 10 participants checking their phones to see what’s in their mail every day.

Postmaster General Megan Brennan said at a recent mailing industry trade show that the USPS is increasingly seeking to bridge digital and physical content, in particular to attract more marketing dollars through mobile technologies such as QR codes and augmented reality, whereby branded content for example could be superimposed on the user’s environment as seen through a smartphone screen.

“When we extend that physical experience of mail into a mobile experience, mail delivers much greater value for the sender and receiver,” said Brennan, adding that she is committed to investing in innovation to spur growth and profitability.
