White House Issues Report Addressing Technical Side of Big Data, Privacy

The White House Council of Advisors on Science and Technology has issued a report, Big Data: A Technological Perspective, detailing technical mattersatthe nexus of big data and privacy.

In producing the report, the council said it reviewed technical literature, consulted with additional experts on relevant technologies, solicited input from the social science and legal fields and deliberated over the privacy implications of a huge and expanding increase in data collection.

Recommendations in the report include focusing policy more on how big data is being usedand less on its collection and analysis; Policies and regulations should avoid embedding technological solutions and focus more on desired outcomes; and, the US should take the lead by adopting privacy-preserving practices.
