Attacks against federal employees working on public lands continued to rise in 2002, according to data compiled by Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility. Attacks on employees from agencies including the Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management and Fish and Wildlife Service included death threats, assaults and incidents involving weapons such as pipe bombs and assault weapons. The group reported 141 such incidents in 2002, up from 118 in 2001 and from 54 in 1999.
