Base Closings Process Starting Up

A proposed base closings list is due to be released by the Defense Department within days, setting off what will be—if past experience is a guide–an extended period of anxiety and rumors running throughout DoD, accompanied by intensive lobbying by members of Congress and local communities. The Pentagon has indicated that the base closings list likely will be a substantial one, in part due to an expectation that this will be the only round for some time to come. The four rounds of base closings and realignments conducted from 1988-1995 resulted in the closing of nearly 100 major facilities, the reorganization of many more, and the loss of nearly 130,000 on-base jobs.
