Under pressure from Congress, OPM is allowing agencies to accept belated enrollments in the FEHB program through January, in order to give enrollees more time to assess the potential impact of changes in plan offerings for 2009, especially from the program’s largest carrier, Blue Cross-Blue Shield. The action came after a quickly called House hearing examining a change in setting a higher co-pay for non-emergency surgeries performed by out of network doctors. OPM also asked carriers to reevaluate their benefits for non-emergency services. The open season would have ended Monday (December 8) otherwise.
