Budget Projects Job Growth

The White House’s fiscal 2008 budget proposal projects full-time equivalent federal employment of 1,872,800 next year, which would be up by about 57,000 since 2004, and up by 40,000 over the 2006 actual total. The projected 2007 total is 1,859,700. Much of the increase would be—and has been—in defense and homeland security related functions; for example, the budget proposes hiring an additional 3,000 border patrol agents next year and TSA has said it wants to add 1,300 employees. The DHS estimate of 157,200 employees in 2008 is up by nearly 20,000 since 2004. Also, Justice’s projected figure of 112,600 is up by more than 11,000 in four years. DoD employment—including military functions and civil functions in the Army Corps of Engineers—is projected to stand at 693,200, up from 673,900 in 2004.
