DoD Furloughs to Start July 8

DoD is sending out notices to employees notifying them that its 11 furlough days will start the week of July 8. As in other agencies that have imposed furloughs, employees have the right to demand certain information from management, which is to be provided by July 5. Furloughs have been under way in several other agencies for weeks, but the DoD furlough will hit by far the largest number of employees—the latest count is around 680,000, after exemptions for certain categories, including many Navy shipyard workers added recently to the excepted list. Also newly exempt are employees of Tinker Air Force base whose homes were destroyed or made uninhabitable by the recent tornadoes in Oklahoma. The 11 days also will be among the highest number of days although DoD has held out some hope of reducing the number further—it originally projected 22, then 14, before settling on 11.
