Federal employees in general consider their core employment-related benefits important but in many cases do not know how well those benefits compare with the private sector’s offerings, according to survey results released by OPM. For example, only 10 percent or less of respondents said that their health insurance, retirement, TSP and retiree health benefits are not important or only somewhat important to them. Three-quarters deemed each “very important.” Twenty-nine percent said FEGLI is not important or only somewhat important, while opinions were more split regarding long-term care insurance, flexible spending accounts, telework, child care subsidies and health and wellness programs. On average, perceptions of the importance of benefits increased slightly since a prior similar study in 2004. The online survey sent out last September received 380 responses from new employees and 470 from longer-service employees and has a margin of error of 3 percentage points.
