The Office of Personnel Management has sent to agencies guidance on how to carry out several policies involving Federal Employees Health Benefits coverage for employees who are mobilized for military duty. Benefits Administration Letter 06-401 provides guidance a provision of a 2004 law extending in some circumstances from 18 months to 24 months the period that such employees can keep their FEHB coverage and outlines specific eligibility rules and agency responsibilities under the policy .The memo encourages, but does not require, employing agencies to pay both the employer and employee shares of FEHB premiums for such service. Benefits Administration Letter 05-411 addresses issues related to reinstating FEHB coverage for employees and annuitants who are called or ordered to active duty and who enroll in the Tricare Reserve Select health program.
