Medicare Rates Also Increasing

Meanwhile, rates under the Medicare program also are increasing for 2008. The premium paid by the large majority of enrollees in Part B of the program (generally covering physicians’ services) will rise to $96.40 a month, up by $2.90. Higher-income retirees pay higher premiums, ranging in 2008 up to $238.40 a month. The Part B deductible will $135, up by $4. The Part A (inpatient hospital care) deductible will be $1,024, and the daily copay for days 61 through 90 in a hospital will increase to $256, and for days beyond the 90th day to $512. Daily copays for stays in a skilled nursing facility will be $128, for eligible periods. The estimated average monthly premium for Part D (prescription drug coverage) will be $25, up from $22; however, few federal retirees who continue their FEHB insurance take Part D since FEHB plans already provide prescription drug coverage that is generally considered superior to what Part D provides.
