The IRS has increased the mileage reimbursement rate used for certain tax purposes effective in January, which if past practice is followed will result in a parallel increase in reimbursements for federal employees using their personal vehicles for official purposes.
The IRS raised its rate, used to calculate the deductible costs of operating an automobile for business, charitable, medical or moving purposes, to 67 cents per mile, an increase of 1.5 cents.
The GSA generally sets the rate applying to federal employees using personal vehicles for official travel to match that IRS rate, although it has discretion to set a different figure. The GSA announcement, typically just before or after the turn of the year, also includes other applicable rates, such as for use of a motorcycle.
Mileage rates typically apply for an entire calendar year basis but they can change during the course of a year due to significant changes in fuel costs.
Note: If your agency denies your claim for reimbursement related to official travel, you must first follow your agency’s procedures for challenging disallowed claims. This may mean that you must file a new claim, providing full itemization for all disallowed items reclaimed, receipts for all disallowed items reclaimed that require receipts (except that you do not have to provide a receipt if your agency already has the receipt), a copy of the notice of disallowance and state the proper authority for your claim if you are challenging your agency’s application of the law or statute.
