One Disciplinary Bill Falls Short, Others Advance

A majority of the House voted to pass a bill advocating the firing of federal employees seriously delinquent on their taxes, although the margin fell short of the two-thirds needed under the special voting rules under which the bill was considered. Sponsors may try again using standard rules, although that likely would not happen soon. The House did pass, unanimously, a separate bill (HR-1562) to disqualify contractors who similarly are delinquent. It also passed HR-1152, to prohibit IRS employees from using personal email accounts to conduct official business; and HR-709, which would add to the list of mandatory firing offenses at the IRS performing, delaying or failing to perform (or threatening to do any of those) an official action for personal gain or for a political purpose.
