Open Season Coming Up

Starting November 14 and running through December 12 is the annual open season for the Federal Employees Health Benefits program, in which those not participating may join it, and in which current enrollees may change plans, change between self-only and self-and-family coverage, or change levels of coverage within a plan, for those plans offering a choice. The typical employee share of premiums is going up by about 10 percent, even though the overall average premium increase is estimated at 6.6 percent (the difference relates to changes in the amount of money the government is setting aside for the program because it over-funded its share for 2005). During the same period is the annual open season for enrolling in flexible spending accounts for the upcoming calendar year; unlike the FEHB, a new enrollment is required each year for FSAs.
