The budget also says that an initiative to examine and potentially reduce the presence of federal civilian jobs overseas will continue, saying the cost of an overseas employee is about $491,000 a year, counting salary, travel, various allowances, support costs and other costs. One element of the program is getting better data on overseas staffing and incorporating that data into the budget process. Also, “rightsizing” reviews are now required in certain situations, such as the opening of a new facility, and some functions that are not “location specific” are being consolidated.
