Recent Furloughs Have Been Lower Visibility

In the Memorial Day weekend closing there was little public attention, in part because many private sector workers take time off leading into holidays as well and are less likely to be looking for government services at that time. That lack of attention has meant that the closings have failed to stir bids to stop the furloughs at those agencies, many of whose functions are largely out of the public’s eye on a day to day basis. In contrast, furloughs of air traffic controllers and other FAA employees were ended soon after they started due to the impact on travel, and furloughs of Park Policy similarly were quickly called off after concerns about safety arose. Similarly, potential furloughs of high-profile functions including food inspection and prison security were headed off before they even started.
