Retiree Rehiring Again Urged

"There also is a need for agencies to be able to retain recently retired federal employees to assist with short-term projects, such as employee training, or fill, on a part-time basis, critical skill gaps so agencies can meet their mission goals. By enacting an annuitant reemployment provision that would allow retirees to receive a salary plus their annuity, agencies would be able to meet their staffing needs," OPM said. A proposal is pending in the Senate (S-2003) reflecting a request OPM made last year to allow annuitants to work without the standard offset between annuities and salary for up to 520 hours in the first six months after retirement, up to 1,040 in any 12-month period and 6,240 hours lifetime (the equivalent of working half-time for six years). However, the rehired retirees would not build additional credits toward their annuities or make new investments in the TSP, and they would not be eligible to pay their FEHB premiums through the pre-tax arrangement available to employees.
