Some Differences by Agency

Defense agencies generally had the highest percentage of veterans in their workforces, with the Air Force figure at 47 percent, followed by the Army and Navy, at about 39 and 37 percent. Various DoD activities and the Veterans Affairs Department were 27 percent veteran. Departments with the lowest percentage of veterans included Health and Human Services, Education and Treasury, at about 8, 9 and 11 percent of their workforces, respectively. The percentages of veterans also tended to be lower in independent agencies, ranging from about 23 percent at the General Services Administration to 4 percent at the Federal Trade Commission; the figure at OPM is 18 percent.
