The Senate Finance Committee has approved a transportation and tax reform bill that includes several tax incentives for using public transportation for commuting, including a proposed increase, effective in January 2006, of the monthly amount of a transit subsidy that is considered tax-free. The monthly tax-free maximum would rise from the current $105 to $155, under the bill, while the maximum monthly amount for qualified parking (such as parking at transit stations) would remain at $200. Many federal agencies—along with many private sector employers—provide transit subsidies as an incentive for their employees to take transit or use van pools, although not all of them provide the maximum. Relatively few agencies pay parking subsidies.
