Watch Insurance Eligibility Changes

During the ongoing benefits open season, one notable change to note is that employees in same-sex marriages (performed in jurisdictions where those marriages are recognized, regardless of current place of residence) can enroll their spouses as well as children of that couple in family coverage in FEHB. The same applies in the FEDVIP vision-dental insurance program. A special enrollment period following the Supreme Court decision overturning the law that had prevented such enrollments has ended although there are some exceptions allowing for continued enrollments that would be effective immediately. Further, children of a same-sex domestic partner will be eligible in 2014, although not the partner himself or herself, but only if the enrollee lives in a state that does not recognize same-sex marriage.
