In tax year 2000, you can leave any amount to your spouse and up to $675,000 to other heirs — and pay zero federal estate tax on it. This allowance is scheduled to increase gradually to $1 million per person by 2006. However, estates larger than $1 million are taxed at 41% to 55%.
