If you’re considering a long-distance change of address, don’t wait until the last minute. Years before you retire, you’ll want to start selecting the area of the country you prefer.

The only way to this the right way is by going there. Suppose, for example, you’re thinking of moving to Florida. You might spend one vacation on the Atlantic Coast, one on the Gulf Coast, one in the Panhandle, etc., to see which area appeals the most. Further vacations can be spent in search of a particular town or community.

Key Point: Don’t rush to buy a house in Arizona or Florida 10 years before you retire because “the price is right.” Often, you won’t use the house very much, you’ll consider it a waste, and you’ll rent the property out. Then you’ll probably discover the rental income isn’t what you expected. As with most big decisions, you’re better off not rushing into things.
