The Marine Corps has consolidated all operations in the Information Environment military occupational specialty (MOS) into a new one, to be known as the 17XX Information Maneuver OCCFLD. The change places Marines trained in space, electromagnetic spectrum operations, cyber warfare, civil affairs and psychological warfare under one umbrella for career-management purposes.
“The Information Maneuver OCCFLD provides Marines the opportunity to continue doing what they are passionate about,” said Lt. Gen. Matthew Glavy, deputy commandant for Information. “When you put people first and provide them the opportunity to pursue a career they are passionate about, they give back tenfold to the team and our mission is gaining advantage in the IE (information environment).”
With the change, the Marines intend to foster an environment where skilled and experienced people are better inclined to remain on active duty. Before the new arrangement, Marines who worked with Marine Expeditionary Force Information Groups or at combat commands would return to their prior MOS once their tours end. The service then would have to cycle more Marines through the training process. As such, Marines would garner no more than three years’ experience in their information billets.
“The professionalization of information-related MOSs improves retention and readiness by avoiding Marines with valuable skills forced into deciding either to return to the prior MOS or exit the Marine Corps to continue following their passion,” said Col. Jordan Waler, director of Information Maneuver Division, DC I.
