3 To Receive Medal of Honor

Two soldiers who fought in Vietnam and one who was killed during the Battle of Gettysburg will receive the Medal of Honor, the White House announced Aug. 26. Command Sgt. Maj. Bennie G. Adkins earned the honor in March 1966, while serving as an intelligence sergeant with Detachment A-102, 5th Special Forces group, 1st Special Forces, in Camp A Shau, Vietnam. Spec 4 Donald P. Sloat earned the award posthumously for heroism he demonstrated when he jumped on a grenade during a firefight near Hawk Hill Fire Base, Vietnam, on Jan. 17, 1970. The explosion killed Sloat. He was a machine gunner with Company D, 2nd Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment, 196th Light Infantry Brigade, Americal Division, at the time. Cushing earned the honors while serving as commanding officer of Battery A, 4th United States artillery, Artillery Brigade, 2nd Corps, Army of the Potomac, on July 3, 1863 at Cemetery Ridge in Gettysburg. His unit was repelling Confederate attackers during Pickett’s Charge.
