AF Lieutenants to Learn Fate in May

Almost 2,100 Air Force lieutenants in year groups 2002 and 2003 could learn as early as May 10 whether they have been selected for involuntary release. To be let go will be 708 of 1,536 lieutenants in year group 2002 and 187 of 549 in year group 2003. The Air Force originally announced plans to separate more than 1,700 from the two year groups who are in imbalanced career fields, but about half have elected to leave voluntarily. The exodus removed 12 career fields from consideration for involuntary releases. A force shaping board will decide the fate of the remaining lieutenants. Those selected will be separated by Sept. 30.
