AF to Release 138 Lieutenants

Of 1,208 Air Force lieutenants commissioned in 2005 who are in overmanned career fields, 463 are exempt from involuntary release, which leaves 745 at risk. From these, 138 will either be allowed to leave the service early or selected for release by force-shaping boards. The Air Force plans to publish a list of Air Force Specialty Codes (AFSCs) for lieutenants who will face the boards in December. By then, officials expect to know how many officers in overmanned AFSCs have requested separation in exchange for cancellation of service commitments incurred through Air Force Academy attendance or ROTC scholarships. Such officers will not qualify for voluntary separation pay. Altogether, the force expects to drop 827 officer slots. In addition to the lieutenants, the service will offer incentives to mid-career officers and loosen retirement rules for colonels and lieutenant colonels.
