AF Updates Dress, Appearance Regs

Female airmen are allowed to wear “loc” hairstyles as long as they present “neat, professional appearance,” under an update to the Dress and Personal Appearance of Air Force Personnel guidelines that took effect July 13. Other provisions include:

* No minimum hair length for women, but a maximum bulk of three and a half inches, which allows for proper wear of headgear.
* Dress uniform changes, to include: allowing all enlisteds to wear three-and-a-half inch or four-inch chevrons; all or some ribbons on the service dress uniform; and all, some or no ribbons on the blue service uniform.
* Women can wear round or square white diamond, gold, white pearl or silver earrings with any uniform.
* Airmen can wear sunglasses with small logos that contrast with frame or lens colors.
* Both sling-style and two-strap backpacks are OK as well.
* Handbags must be solid black leather or vinyl, “without ornamentation with black or white stitching.”
* Short- or long-sleeved solid white, black or light gray undershirts can be worn under short-sleeve shirts during physical training (PT). Airmen also can wear balaclavas during outdoor PT activities.
