Air Crews Continue Georgia Relief Effort

Air Force C-130 aircraft continue to deliver medicine, clothing, and other humanitarian supplies to Tblisi, the capital of Georgia, from Ramstein Air Base, Germany, in the wake of the conflict between Georgian and Russian forces that arose earlier this month over control of the border provinces of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. The missions began Aug. 13, shortly after the Russian incursion into Georgia, which resulted in heavy civilian and military casualties. Once offloaded in Tblisi, the supplies are given to Georgian relief coordinators for distribution where they are most needed. “[The] antibiotics will go directly to the hospitals to help Georgians who are suffering in pain,” said Sergey Khomchenko, an official for a Georgian relief organization. “We had more burn victims than we could’ve imagined.”
