Because of a bookkeeping error, 52 members of the Air National Guard have been told to repay a total of $9,100 they received while on tornado recovery duty in Greensburg, Kan. The glitch occurred because McConnell Air Force Base processed 700 to 800 sets of deployment orders when the guard members were activated, and 52 of the troops involved were released earlier than specified by their orders. Their pay records were not adjusted for the change, so they were overpaid. The guard members were deployed to Greensburg to provide shelter and assist with security and communications.
