Service members who fly while traveling under orders will no longer have to pay a new $100 fee several airlines now charge for a third piece of checked baggage. American Airlines first waived the fee on Aug. 13, after an outcry of protest from veterans’ service organizations. Airlines began charging the fees to offset skyrocketing operation costs, associated largely with the recent sharp increase in fuel prices. George S. Lisicki, the national commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, called American’s decision “the right thing to do for our troops.” Following American’s announcement, Northwest, AirTran, Delta, Southwest, Horizon, United, Continental, and Alaska airlines waived similar fees on Aug. 15.
