App Could Screen for Autism

The Office of Naval Research is collaborating on development of an application that could screen for autism by reading children’s facial expressions. Researchers at ONR, Duke University, and the Duke University Medical Center also are optimistic that the app could screen for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI). It is available now for download through the Apple App Store, to families who are willing to take part in a six-month study of its effectiveness. Developers intend for the app to work by analyzing “landmarks” and emotional responses on children’s faces.
