Army Defends Body Armor

The body armor soldiers wear when in harm’s way has passed the most rigorous testing standards in the world for equipment of its kind, the commander of Army Acquisition, Logistics and Technology told a group of journalists during an Aug. 19 briefing at the Pentagon. “We have high confidence in all the protective systems that we give our soldiers,” said Lt. Gen. Bill Phillips. His comments come in the wake of an Aug. 1 report by the Defense Department inspector general, which called for establishment of uniform testing standards for testing, tracking results of, and improving body-armor performance. “We test these plates against the toughest, hardest round in theater and we shoot it at our test ranges at velocities higher than could be fired out of a normal rifle,” said Col. William Cole, project manager, Soldier Protection and Individual Equipment.
