AWOL Soldiers Get $900,000

A General Accounting Office report says nearly $900,000 has been mistakenly paid to 75 Army reservists who failed to show up for duty since late 2001. The 75 soldiers, who were called up after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, have been declared deserters. Arrest warrants were issued for 51. By mid-May, 18 had been apprehended and two had surrendered. So far, less than $18,000 has been repaid. The GAO said the actual number of erroneous payments and the amounts involved are probably significantly understated. The report said the Army and the Army National Guard and Reserve admit being unaware of the extent of the error, and blame the lack of a central data system for being unable to track such records. The GAO originally reported the payment errors in 2004, and followed up this year to see what action has been taken.
