Beware of Internet Scams

Service members increasingly are becoming the targets of internet scams, warns Air Force officials. One example is the “Nigerian Scam,” which the Secret Service calls the “Advance Fee Fraud.” A target receives an e-mail explaining how the sender has come into possession of an incredible sum of money and now needs help getting the money out of the country. The victim is lured into opening a bank account and depositing personal money, which the thief then steals. Another example is a phishing scam, usually in the form of a bank notice warning that critical information is needed to protect the target’s account. Legitimate banks normally make contact by postal mail, and even then the customer is required to make initial contact by telephoning the bank. Furthermore, they do not request information such as account numbers, social security numbers or PINs because they already have that information.
