Bill Benefits Families Beset by Base’s Tainted Water

Families who lived at Camp Lejeune Marine Corps Base, N.C., between 1957 and 1987 and became sick because of contaminated drinking water are now eligible for related health care from the Department of Veterans Affairs. President Obama signed a law granting such benefits on Aug. 6, ending a 10-year battle waged against the government by affected families. They claimed that many Lejeune residents at the time later developed cancer and other illnesses because they drank the foul water.
