Bill Would Neutralize Reservists’ Pay Gap

Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., has sponsored the Helping Our Patriotic Employers at Helping Our Military Employees Act (Hope at Home) in another of several attempts to neutralize pay gaps experienced by some reservists who are activated. The bill would require the government to make up the differences in pay for mobilized federal workers whose net income is reduced when they leave their civilian jobs. It also would authorize tax credits for employers that retain mobilized employees on the payroll, as well as defray the cost of hiring temporary replacements. Although the Defense Department supports the idea of the private sector making up pay losses, department officials object to the federal government’s doing so because of the perception that the government would be paying reservists more for serving in uniform than it pays full-time active-duty service members.
