The Canadian government has rejected a request for amnesty by a U.S. soldier who refused to deploy to Iraq. The soldier, PFC Kimberly Rivera, surrendered to U.S. authorities at the U.S.-Canada border Sept. 20, and was immediately arrested and taken into custody. She is now in detention at Fort Carson, Colo. Rivera, a mother of four, had been in Canada since 2007. She opted to have her children cross into the U.S. separately, to avoid them being detained as well. Rivera is assigned to 2nd Battalion, 77th Field Artillery Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division.
