Following reports of improprieties related to the hiring of staffers at the child development center at Fort Myer, Va., Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta has ordered a review of hiring practices at child-care facilities throughout the Defense Department. Concerns arose after an October internal report unveiled “background issues with some employees, not all of whom were directly responsible for child care,” according to DoD. Those employees were terminated and the facility was temporarily closed as a result. Investigators now are trying to determine the persons who hired the employees in question conducted sufficient background checks first.
