In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, officials last week were rushing to set up commissary services at the Naval Construction Battalion Center, Gulfport, Miss., Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) officials said. DeCA dispatched a team from its headquarters, and from commissaries at Fort Stewart, Ga., MacDill Air Force Base, Fla., Hunter Army Air Field, Ga., Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany, Ga., and Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Fla. They are working out of RVs to conduct damage assessment and cleanup operations. Officials will use an adjacent site for a temporary store that can house a 5,000-square-foot sales area while repairs are being made to the existing commissary. The commissary at New Orleans sustained minimal damage, but it is supporting recovery operations and will remain closed until the installation commander notifies DeCA to reopen. Among the three closed commissaries, the store at Keesler was the hardest hit. Its operational date has not been determined.
