Cutter Contractor Selected

The Coast Guard has selected Eastern Shipbuilding Group of Panama City, Fla., to begin building its lead offshore patrol cutter (OPC). Once built, the OPC would replace the service’s aging medium endurance cutter fleet. Under the $317.5 million contract, the company will provide both the initial components and support materials for the new cutter. It would include provisions for acquisition of propeller and steering components, marine diesel engines, its integrated control system, switchboards and generators. The Coast Guard expects to take delivery of the first OPC in 2021 and intends eventually to acquire 25 of the vessels.
