DeCA: Prepare for Disasters

As the third anniversary of Hurricane Katrina – the worst natural disaster to strike the U.S. shores in recorded history – approaches, the Defense Commissary Agency is urging all of its military customers to prepare for disaster whenever or wherever it occurs next. Households should have on hand enough supplies to survive for three days to one week without running water, electricity, or access to stores that sell food and medicine, DeCA says. Such caches should include non-perishable food, water, batteries, paper goods, disinfectant wipes, trash bags, plastic flatware, pet food, charcoal, and lighting materials.

Hurricane season began June 1 and will continue through Nov. 30.
