Departing Sailors Can Transfer Education Benefits

Sailors who must leave the service as a result of recent Enlisted Retention Board actions can transfer their Post 9/11 GI Bill education benefits to dependents, the Navy Personnel Command announced. The policy allows transfer of all or part of the education-benefits package to a spouse or a child who is enrolled in the Defense Eligibility Enrollment System (DEERS). To qualify for transferability, sailors must have served at least 10 years in any branch of the armed forces. If there is an official reason why sailors are restricted from serving the 10-year minimum, they must agree to serve the maximum amount of time allowable. Sailors who do not meet the 10-year requirement and decide not to enter the Reserves cannot transfer their GI Bill benefits. More information is available online at http://www.gibill.va.gov/benefits/post_911_gibill/transfer_of_benefits.html. Sailors can apply for transferability at https://www.dmdc.osd.mil/TEB.
