Roughly 9,000 soldiers from 82nd Airborne Division Headquarters at Fort Bragg, N.C., and the 4th Brigade Infantry Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo., deploy to Iraq in late spring, the Pentagon announced March 2. They will relieve the 101st Airborne Division Headquarters and the 4th Brigade Combat Team, who will return to Fort Campbell, Ky. Also, the 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, from Fort Lewis, Wash., will relieve the 2nd ID’s 3rd Brigade Combat Team in Iraq as well. The deployments are scheduled for 12 months, and will have no bearing on President Obama’s plan to shift resources and manpower to Afghanistan to Iraq, according to DoD. Present Iraq strength is 146,000, and will likely drop to between 35,000 and 50,000 by August 2010. About 38,000 U.S. troops and 19,000 from other nations form the NATO task force in Afghanistan; U.S. strength there will soon rise by 17,000.
