On Nov. 4, the Department of Defense extended the deadline for reducing or declining increased Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance (SGLI) coverage for service members hit by Hurricane Katrina. DoD had advised earlier that members who submitted a new SGLV 8286 form before Sept. 30, 2005, would not be charged the full September 2005 premium. The new date is Nov. 30, 2005. Maximum SGLI coverage rose to $400,000 effective Sept. 1, 2005. On that date, all members eligible for SGLI were automatically insured for the new maximum coverage unless they requested a reduction or declined coverage. The monthly SGLI premium, at $3.25 per $50,000 of coverage, jumped to $26 for full coverage.
