In a ranking of child care centers by National Association of Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies that was presented to Congress March 1, the Defense Department ranks No. 1 with the best child care center standards and oversight practices of 50 states. DoD was considered with the states in a process that compared the written policies of each with basic quality indicators in child care. The department was the only "state" to appear on the top 10 lists in both child care center standards and oversight standards. The report highlighted the requirements that: DoD’s child care center directors have a bachelor’s degree or higher; the child care staff be trained in first aid and CPR; and the staff members pursue further training. The report also mentioned the importance of the department’s conducting criminal history record checks, child abuse and neglect registry checks, and state, federal and fingerprint checks.
