EOD Officer Earns Bronze Star

Navy Lt. (j.g.) Dominic R. Frank, of the Bangor, Wash.-based Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit (EODMU) 11, was awarded the Bronze Star medal with Combat "V" device during an Aug. 30 ceremony in Silverdale, Wash., for his actions during a Jan. 28, 2010 firefight in Lak Shar Ghar village, Afghanistan. The records show that Frank led an assault force that removed improvised explosive devices (IEDs) that obstructed the path to the mission’s intended target – an area believed to be housing enemy forces. Frank helped treat a wounded Air Force combat controller, and exposed himself to enemy fire while leading stretcher teams out to a helicopter-landing zone for medevac. "I feel good that I got the award, but at the same time I’m not," Frank said. "It’s kind of bittersweet. This was a very bad day where a lot of guys out there did the right thing. Like one of the medics, who got wounded out there and got a Silver Star," Frank said. He is now attached to a shore-based detachment of the same unit.
